You would think that after being a life coach for more than 5 years that I would have “life” figured out.
Ha.
I wish it was that simple.
The truth is that every year around this time, I have to take a step back and re-evaluate who I am.
Did you catch that?
I am not evaluating what I have done or what goals I have or have not achieved.
I am evaluating who I am and who I am becoming. This includes:
- My attitude
- My generosity
- My capacity to forgive and show grace
- My patience
- My willingness to accept correction 🥲
- My courage to face my fears
- My relationships with others
- My relationship with God
- My relationship with myself
What I have learned is that without self-reflection and awareness, I will never grow into the person I am meant to become. And I will never achieve all of the personal and professional goals I have set out for myself.
Self-reflection and self-evaluation can be hard. It’s not easy holding a mirror up to yourself. Our natural instinct is to find all of the things that are wrong with us. We have a tendency to want to judge, criticize, and pick apart ourselves.
This is not self-evaluation. That is self-inflicted abuse and torture.
Self-evaluation taking an honest look at yourself through the lens of love and grace. Self-evaluation includes praises and rewards for the growth and the good in you. It also includes gentle correction and a call to become the next best version of yourself.
When you are done, you should feel a sense of pride, self-love, self-encouragement and motivation.
But you must take your time to do it. This is not something that can be done in an hour or even a day. This is a process that must be done over the course of a few days when you can dedicate uninterrupted time for yourself.
Self-reflection and self-evaluation, when done right, can be the catalyst that you need to make this next month or the next year the best one yet!
